Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children™

Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children™ is a prevention and education program that teaches elementary school-aged children that their bodies belong to them, it is okay to say "NO!" to unwanted touches from anyone, to tell a trusted adult, and abuse is never their fault. These messages of empowerment will affect these children for a lifetime, as well as their friends and siblings, and their own children one day.

Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, we will be incorporating material from Child Lures® and Teen Lures® to supplement our Smart Steps curriculum.  These evidence-based programs encompass all forms of body safety, including child abuse and neglect, bullying, and cyber-bullying.  Adding these important lessons to our already strong curriculum will meet SEA 355 legislation mandating child sexual abuse, child abuse and neglect, and bullying prevention education for all students in K-12 grades...every year, every grade.

Smart Steps Instructors

Instructors for the Smart Steps Program include Chaucie's Place staff and community volunteers.  Each instructor is screened, trained and coordinated by Chaucie's Place staff.  All volunteers attend a training seminar, learn to use a script developed specially for the Smart Steps Program and shadow experienced instructors until they are ready to present on their own.  If you are interested in volunteering, please email Summer Huber, Volunteer Coordinator at

If you are interested in bringing Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children™ to your school and/or youth-serving organization, please contact Michelle Linden Mates, Director of Programs at 317-759-8008 or
